How often does God call?
Everyone’s calls looks different and comes at different points in life. The truth is, we experience many different calls in our life. We are called to some things for our entire lives (our Primary calling as a child of God, of course; but also to a certain cause, way of being, or a certain relationship), but many of our calls are for shorter periods of time. Even a career calling can change over our lifetime.
We can be called to help out with a program at church, or called to reach out to a friend who may be struggling, or called to donate our time or energy or money to a cause (for just a moment, just a day, or for years). You might be called to apply for a job, or called to be a parent, or called to create something.
Sometimes you’re called to reach a particular ‘destination’, and sometimes you’re just called to start walking the trail without knowing precisely where it will end.
Are you worried about God never calling you again if you don’t hear God the first time? Fear not! God will continue to reach out to you, but it’s up to you to listen for the whispers of the Holy Spirit. Lean on Marker 7, Marker 8, and Marker 9 to help you.
Action Item:
Think about one or both of your parents or grandparents and the job(s) that they do or have done in their life. Spend a few minutes writing in your journal, answering the following questions. If you don’t know the answers, please take the time to ask!
- What job(s) does (or did) this person do to earn a living?
- Was this the job they imagined themselves doing when they were your age?
- What OTHER roles does this person fill, besides the job mentioned previously?
